Abrams Department Store Department Store

Abrams Department Store was located at 2425 W. Devon Avenue. It was a favorite place to purchase kids shoes because the brand they carried was Red Goose Shoes.

The kids shoe business was profitable. Several different brands, most gone by now, competed for the feet of America's future. In addition to Red Goose, there was Striderite, Buster Brown, and Poll Parrot. Red Goose and Poll Parrot were swallowed up by International Shoes. Buster Brown and Striderite are still going strong.

The shoe department had a Shoe-fitting Fluoroscope, a device that provided an x-ray view of a child's feet. This was a popular device that answered a parent's question, "Is there enough room in these shoes?" These devices weren't used very long before concerns about radiation took them off the market.
