There was a bear that was found as a cub by Fr. McCarthy of St. Margaret Mary Church. He named it "Gyp".
He raised it to adulthood in a cage by the Rectory.
When Fr. McCarthy was transferred to another parish, he donated the bear to the Indian Boundary Park Zoo.
This was supposed to have happened within the late 1930-early 1940 time frame.
Two brown bears, Ike and Adlai, arrived at the zoo on October 26, 1952.
