Hamilton Avenue

Hamilton Avenue Soundex Code H543

2100 W., from 7318 N. to 10658 S. This street is in West Ridge from Greenleaf Avenue south to Norwood Street

This street was originally known as Morton Street.

The City Council passed a lengthy ordinance January 14, 1895, rationalizing the street naming system. Hamilton did not exist at this time so all addresses on Hamilton do not need conversion.

This avenue is believed to honor Richard J. Hamilton, who was probably the first lawyer in Chicago in 1831. He was also the first Circuit Court Clerk of Cook County and a Chicago real estate developers.

There is a possibility, however, that the avenue was named for Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1789-1795). His portrait adorns the $10 bill.

Not listed in, or not far enough north to enter Rogers Park or West Ridge in 1895, 1897, 1898, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 Chicago Blue Book.
