The Chicago City Council passed a lengthy ordinance January 14, 1895, rationalizing the street naming system. Because Jarvis did not exist at this time, all addresses on Jarvis do not require conversion.
Bryan Avenue was the present 1200 W to 1700 W part of Jarvis Avenue.
Named for R.J. Jarvis, who supposedly was a friend of Patrick Leonard Touhy and Philip McGregor Rogers, and worked with them in establishing the community of Rogers Park.
The identity of Mr. Jarvis and his connection to Rogers Park has come into question on Monday, September 8, 2014, by Alderman Joe Moore when the name of Jarvis Beach Park was being changed to Marion Mahony Griffin Beach and Park.
This question has yet to be resolved.
