Began as clerk in the Illinois Agency of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1885; later became agent and then cashier, 1902-11; general agent Illinois Life Insurance Company since Friday, September 1, 1911.

Along with Henry D. Capitain, Cleveland began a legal movement to create the Ridge Avenue Park District that would serve to improve West Ridge and Rogers Park, west of the Chicago & North Western Railway's tracks in to Ridge Boulevard.
