in dry goods business in Aurora, Illinois under firm name of Holmes, Miller & Son, 1887, sold out in 1890;

entered employ of Bush & Gerts Piano Company as bookkeeper, 1891, elected assistant secretary same, 1899, secretary, 1901, vice-president, 1904.
