When Mafat Patel met Mr. Ramesh Trivedi, who was interested in selling his Indian Grocery Business Mafat informed his brother, Tulsi Patel, and his sister-in-law, Aruna Patel, and, together, they invested in this new venture. Even with Chicago's growing Indian population, local grocery stores did not offer the ingredients to make a traditional Indian meal. So it was that, in September of 1974, Tulsi and Aruna opened the first Patel Brothers store, at 2034 W. Devon Avenue. Patel Brothers is now the largest Indian Grocery chain in America, with over 35 stores nationwide and still growing.
