In the early 1800s, State Road was a main route south through Illinois, hence the name: State Street. Later it came to be called "that Great Street."

Chicago's busy, crowded, and exciting retail heart. Potter Palmer virtually made State Street, gambling on its future in the late 1860s, he built the Field & Leiter Department Store there in 1868 and his grand Palmer House Hotel there in 1870.
