Became identified with the educational publishing business in 1892, as member of the firm of Gillian & Bloomfield, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, publishers of The Western Teacher magazine, with which he remained until 1894,

1894, he came to Chicago as manager of Houghton, Mifflin & Co., publishers of Boston, Massachusetts and its successor Houghton Mifflin Co., in which position he has since remained.
