John Stephen Wright, born in 1815, was the oldest of four brothers who engaged in Chicago Real Estate speculation between about 1835 and 1870. In 1853, Stephen Wright and a partner, James H. Rees, purchased some 300 acres of woodland on the shore of Lake Michigan about 3 miles north of Lake Street . In the financial Panic of 1857 he lost all his holdings to his brothers and other creditors. Timothy Wright, the second oldest brother, owned much of the 300 acres of land--the heart of Wrightwood, Edward Wright, the youngest brother served as Timothy's attorney and handled the subdivision's legal work.
